The chinese punctuation marks are so important in Chinese Grammar. As in other languages, the chinese punctuation marks give meaning and rhythm to the text, then they are really important to correctly understand a reading.  In contrast we could think, the chinese punctuation marks are not so different from ours. Next we will see some chinese punctuation marks and their uses

The Chinese Punctuation Marks, as in other languages, delimit the sentences and paragraphs and establish the syntactic hierarchy of propositions, structuring the text, sort and prioritize ideas in primary and secondary, and remove ambiguities. The punctuation varies according the writting style. The stylistic differences  do not exempt anyone to complying with the Chinese Grammar standards and avoid errors generally considered unacceptable.

The Chinese Punctuation Marks also build their writting thought. In this way, as happens in poetry for more than a century, there are not exact rules to regulate the correct use o Chinese Punctuation Marks.

 Period, 句号
表示一句话完了之后的停顿。Use a period at the end of a complete sentence that is a statement.我们的朋友遍天下。
Comma, 逗号
表示一句话中间的停顿。Use commas to sexpress short pauses.
Back-Sloping Comma,   顿号
表示句中并列的词或词组之间的停顿。Use a back-sloping comma to express a short pause or separate words and word groups. It is also used in conditional clauses.
Semicolon, 分号
用于分句之间,表示大于逗号而小于句号的停顿。Like commas, semicolons indicate an audible pause—slightly longer than a comma’s, but short of a period’s full stop.对人民有利的事,我们一定要办;对人民不利的事,我们一定不办。
Colon , 冒号
用以提示下文。Express what happens next.
Question Mark, 问号
用在问句之后。Use a question mark  after a direct question.刚才谁来了?
Exclamation Mark, 感叹号
表示强烈的感情。Use an exclamation point to show emotion, emphasis, or surprise. An exclamation point replaces a period at the end of a sentence.
Quotation Mark, 引号
  1. 表示引用的部分。常用的是双引号(“”)。引号中再用引号时,用单引号(‘’)。

Use double quotation marks to set off a direct (word-for-word) quotation.

  1. 表示特定的称谓或需要着重指出的部分。

Used to emphasize tittles or underline text.

  1. 表示讽刺的意思。

Express irony.

Parentheses, Brackets,   括号
()[ ]表示文中注释的部分。Used to give explanations.
The Ellipsis, 省略号
……表 示文中省略的部分。用六个圆点,占两个字的位置。This six dots are uses to indicate the omited part in a sentence.
Dash, 破折号——在文中占两个字的位置 Indicate added emphasis, an interruption, or an abrupt change of thought.
